The pulp pump functions by virtue of the impeller's high-speed rotation, which gives rise to centrifugal force. As the impeller spins at a rapid pace within the pump housing, a region of low pressure emerges at the heart of the pump chamber. Under the influence of external pressure, the pulp is drawn into the pump chamber via the inlet. Once inside, the pulp is impelled by the impeller blades and embarks on a high-speed circular trajectory in unison with the impeller. Thanks to the effect of centrifugal force, the pulp is projected towards the volute flow passage of the pump body and subsequently progresses towards the pump outlet along this passage. In this way, the pulp is transported from the low-pressure zone to the high-pressure area, attaining the goal of transferring it from one site, like the pulp storage tank, to another, such as the headbox of the papermaking machine.
Common shaft seals include packing seals and mechanical seals. The packing seal has a simple structure, consisting of a stuffing box, packing, and packing gland, etc. It prevents pulp leakage through close contact between the packing and the pump shaft. However, the packing seal needs to adjust the tightness of the packing regularly, and the leakage is relatively large.
Mechanical seals have better sealing performance. They are composed of moving rings, static rings, springs and other components. The moving ring rotates with the pump shaft, and the static ring is fixed on the pump body. The close fit between the two achieves a good sealing effect with very little leakage. In some papermaking processes that have strict leakage requirements, such as when the pulp concentration is high or contains corrosive chemicals, mechanical seals can better meet production needs.
Abrasion resistance:
As pulp contains a large number of fibres, fillers and other solid particles, it will cause serious wear to the pump's overflow parts during the conveying process. Therefore, the impeller, pump body, liner and other overflow parts of the pulp pump are usually made of wear-resistant materials. Commonly used wear-resistant materials include high chromium cast iron, stainless steel and so on. High chromium cast iron has the characteristics of high hardness and good wear resistance, which can effectively resist the scouring and abrasion of solid particles in the pulp and extend the service life of the pump. In some large paper mills, the pulp pump after a long time of operation, the wear of its overflow parts is still within acceptable limits, thanks to its use of high-quality wear-resistant materials and reasonable structural design.
Corrosion resistance:
In the papermaking process, pulp is often chemically treated and contains acidic or alkaline substances, which requires pulp pumps to have good corrosion resistance. Some pulp pumps are made of stainless steel, such as 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel, etc. These stainless steel materials can resist acid and alkali corrosion in the pulp to a certain extent, to ensure the normal operation and service life of the pump. For some special pulp, such as pulp containing strong corrosive chemicals, you can also use special alloy materials or anti-corrosion coating on the inside of the pump body to meet its corrosion resistance requirements.
